OUR lovely tour of Cornwall, as the Voice continues its serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County, today finds us in the towans near Hayle and Gwithian.
Voice journalist Andrew Townsend, the author of the book, says: “Our journeying around Cornwall has recently seen us in the west of the county, visiting Sennen Cove, Cape Cornwall, the Tin Coast, St Ives, Carbis Bay and Hayle.
“For the latest part of the tour, we are following the extensive northern coast of Cornwall in a generally north-easterly direction.”
The sun doesn’t shine in Cornwall every day! You have to be prepared for a fair amount of rain across each year. But dull and wet weather shouldn’t put a stop to getting out and about.
A walk on the towans - the sand dunes - near Hayle and the village of Gwithian is worthwhile in any weather. Just be prepared to battle the wind as it roars in across St Ives Bay on a stormy day.
Having said that, when the sun does shine here, the long, sandy beaches are tremendous. They are good for surfing and bodyboarding, and as the tide goes out there is plenty of space for beach cricket and the like.
On a note of caution, swimmers should avoid the waters at the mouth of the Hayle estuary where the currents can be dangerous.
Next time, we will be looking at Godrevy Island, which sits just off Godrevy Point, and also at the towering cliffs of the ominously-named Hell’s Mouth.

Our extensive tour around Cornwall, visiting well-known spots but also lesser-known locations, offers something for everyone, from sandy beaches, remote moorland, storm-beaten cliffs and scenic rivers to historic towns, pretty villages, mining relics and visitor attractions.
