I AM a Christian – an active and involved member of one of the local churches. I am also an active and involved member of a local political party.

Some people believe that Christians should not be involved in politics. They are wrong! Jesus was very much involved in the politics of his day. From the beginning of his ministry, he made it clear that he had been sent by God to bring good news to the poor and humble, not to the rich and self-satisfied. And he was killed because he dared to criticise the rulers.

Since Jesus’ time on earth, hundreds of Christians have been killed because they have advocated the sort of values Jesus taught and have spoken out against oppression and injustice.

In 21st century Britain, Christians are highly unlikely to be put to death for their faith but within the past few years more than one practising Christian has been imprisoned for preaching or demonstrating Christian values.

I was brought up in a household where Christian values and political activism went hand in hand. My parents worked hard in our local church and were also active in a local political group. One of my early memories is of helping my mother deliver leaflets before a General Election.

My parents also believed that Christians had a moral duty to serve their local community, and both served as councillors. At that time, most councillors stood as independents.

In May, we shall once again be voting for representatives to both Cornwall Council and our local town councils. Hopefully, there will be plenty of Christians among those standing for election. This country needs leaders at all levels who will be prepared to put the good of all people above personal and party interests and to speak truth to power.
