The 400th anniversary of the Bodmin Wassail was a huge success, with the historic event raising over £1,100 for charity.

The annual event, which is believed to have begun in the town in 1624, marks the end of the festive season, saw the wassailers tour venues and properties in Bodmin.

This year’s event, marking the 400th continuous wassail raised money for Equally Abled, a Bodmin group which provides a social space and opportunities for youngsters with additional needs.

The event began at the Shire House Suite, where the wassailers were greeted by the mayoral party led by Cllr Phil Cooper, before undertaking a tour which, in addition to visiting a number of private homes, saw the group bring cheer to the Masons Arms, Garland Ox, Weavers and Hole in the Wall public houses.

A spokesperson for the Bodmin Wassail said: “A massive thank you to everyone that supported our 400th wassail!

“Thanks go to Bodmin Town Council for putting on such a great gathering to start the day.

“We were all so appreciative of the amazing plaque to mark the anniversary and the wonderful exhibition that has been created. A big thank you to all those who hosted and donated this year to support us. We raised an amazing £1,150 for Equally ABLED and know that it will be put to good use.

“Also, a thank you to Fleurtations Cornwall for our beautiful buttonholes, Happy New Year to you all. Wassail!”
