A wallaby has died after being hit by a vehicle at St Columb on Friday night. (August 23)
The animal collided with a Land Rover on the A39 between St Columb and the Fraddon roundabout at 10.40pm.
Police were in attendance before the wallaby was hit by the vehicle. It is not known yet if the animal had escaped or was living wild.
Eyewitness Ben Ambridge, who captured a video of the wallaby before it was knocked over, said: “I was driving on my way home from work and there were lots of police cars, so I pulled into a lay-by.
“Then more police came, and a wallaby ran out from the middle of the roundabout. The police opened the road, and I carried on towards Fraddon.
“The police had the traffic at standstill. I was two cars back and they let the oncoming traffic through very slowly, but the wallaby ran straight into the Land Rover.
“The poor man who was driving didn’t know what had happened.
“The wallaby rolled around for a few minutes then was pretty still when I drove past. Very sad that it happened.”
Staff at the nearby Springfield Fun Park stated the wallaby was not from the attraction. They said Springfield has two wallabies, which are “safe and well.”
Newquay Zoo and the Screech Owl Sanctuary have also confirmed the wallaby was not one of theirs.
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police were notified to reports of an injured wallaby in the road on the A39 at St Columb.
“Officers attended to find that the wallaby had been hit by a vehicle and had sadly died.
“The animal was dropped to a local veterinary clinic.”
