YOUNG people in Newquay will be giving a high five after the future of the youth centre has been secured.
Newquay Town Council has reached an agreement with Cornwall Council to take over the freehold of Newquay Youth Centre in Whitegate Road.
Councillors have plans to make improvements once the deal goes through though Young People Cornwall will continue to manage the facility.
The future of Newquay Youth Club was under threat following Cornwall Council’s aspirations to sell the premises as part of a plan to reduce the size of its estate in a bid to cut costs.
Newquay Youth Club had previously been told it would have to vacate the building to accommodate the Adult Education Centre temporarily but was given a reprieve as the Adult Services only needed to use the top floor of the building.
Cllr Sarah Thomson, who has been working on the devolvement, said: “We have saved the youth club for the youth of Newquay and for all the generations that have fond memories of going there.
“A lot of people have a strong attachment with the youth centre, so it is great that it’s been secured.
“The town council is looking forward to seeing the facility reach its full potential for the future.
“We are looking to update the building, bring in new facilities and expanding its opening.
“Youth centres across Cornwall are under threat so for Newquay to keep theirs is brilliant.”
Mayor Drew Creek added: “The town council has secured within its budget money for the youth centre in terms of any remedial work that is required.
“We have got it in writing that Cornwall Council will devolve the building by the end of the year.
“Within the asset transfer if the town council does sell the building, then Cornwall Council would receive the money, but we’ve got no intention of that. We want to secure the future of the youth centre.
“Newquay Youth Centre over the years has had lots of threats so it is great the facility has not been lost, which would have been tragic for the children of Newquay.
“I’m glad its future has been secured, and we will be investing in the children of Newquay.”
