Prime Cattle

The best Prime Cattle trade ever seen at Truro with records smashed yet again and the prices clearly knowing no bounds.
Top honours were very well awarded to a real quality 753kg Continental steer in from Messrs W H & L M Williams and Son of Allet, Truro, who always turn out top notch cattle, realising a record 370p/kg and a resultant record £2,786 per head.
Messrs Williams didn’t stop there, with their stunning 748kg Charolais heifer at only 18 months old parting away for 365p/kg and £2,730.
A 693kg Angus steer from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green sold for 357p/kg (£2,474), J B Old Farms of Treyarnon Bay, Padstow next with their 657kg Limousin steer at 350p/kg (£2,300).
Further heifers in from Laity Farms realised 340p/kg (£2,309) for a 679kg Angus and their South Devon at 326p/kg.

A tidy entry of 30 Cull Cows and Bulls forward and the New Year Trade as strong as the pre-Christmas markets.
A strong 828kg Limousin cow from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green topped the beef types at 239p/kg, which was closely followed by a Limousin cow from Mr I C Prowse of St Allen, Truro at 238p/kg.
Mr R P Forway of Threemilestone, Truro was next with his 746kg Limousin cow at 235p/kg and an Angus cow from Mr M J Williams of Constantine, Falmouth topped the Natives at 216p/kg.
Dairy types topped by the best Friesian from the regular consigner Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro at 202p/kg, Messrs E V & B K Benney of Garras, Helston saw their Friesian make 193p/kg and another Friesian from Mr Heller at 169p/kg thereafter.

A sensational trade for the first store market of 2025.
A light entry sold to a top call of £2065 for an outstanding 29 month old Limousin steer from Mr R I P Andrew of Coverack, Helston, who went on to sell further slightly younger Limousins at £1870 for two and £1810 for four.
Mr J Kitto of Gwennap, Redruth sold a cracking pair of 22 month old British Blues at £1905, and an 18 month old pair at £1635, whilst Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell sold 22 month old Limousins to £1470.
The heifer trade was no easier, selling to £1865 for a grand bunch of four 30 month old Limousins from Mr R I P Andrew, who also sold a younger trio to £1200.
Heifers from Mr R T Dunn and Mr K R Williams realised £1390 and £1300 respectively, with the latter also marketing a pair of 17 month old Charolais at £1080.

Rearing Calves

After a bitterly cold start the auction soon warmed up with 95 calves passing through the ring, seeing stiff competition for all on offer.
Top price for bull calves was £405 given for a British Blue x bull sold by Messrs C J & P H George from Tresillian, Truro who sold further British Blue x bulls at £385, £380 and £345.
Sixty Acres Ltd from Zelah, Truro also had a good run of calves on offer, their best Limousin x bull making £390. Best of the Aberdeen Angus x bulls sold to £390 on behalf of Messrs S Wallis & Son from Helston.
Leading the way in the heifer section was a British Blue x flying away to £300 for Messrs A D & J A Bray from St Martin, Helston who also sold another British Blue x heifer for £290 closely followed by their Limousin x heifer making £282.
Only 2 young weaned stirks on offer seeing a fast trade with an Aberdeen Angus x steer selling for £575 and an Aberdeen Angus x heifer at £430 for Messrs B & J Bailey of Veryan.

Truly a Happy New Year for vendors as the first Truro market of 2025 witnessed a phenomenal trade for cull sheep of every shape and size.
The top prices and the averages speak for themselves, despite there being very few continentals forward. Topping the section at £200.50 was a Texel wether from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay.
For the ewes, top honours went to Messrs W H Morgan & Sons of St Newlyn East, Newquay with their best pens selling to £199.50, £184, and £166.
Congratulations also to Messrs G W & H E Hawkey of St Wenn, Bodmin with a pair of crossbreds to £160.50 followed by a pen full of fleshy Dorset ewes at £160.
