A quality entry this week and a never-before-seen tempo to the Prime Cattle trade at Truro, with records broken yet again.

Top price was very well awarded to a 644kg Limousin steer from Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin, Helston which raced away to a dizzy 394p/kg (£2,537) and a second 698kg Limousin steer from Messrs Bryant thereafter at 380p/kg (£2,652).

A good pair of non-FABBL Angus steers from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne realised 363p/kg (£2,552) and 362p/kg (£2,577). A real lump of a Limousin steer from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval weighed in at 744kg and parted away for 360p/kg, claiming the top pounds-per-head of £2,678.

Heifers certainly no easier with top price again for a 562kg Limousin heifer from Messrs Bryant at 384p/kg (£2,158), followed by another quality Limousin from Messrs Osborne at 376p/kg (£2,493). Another Limousin heifer from Messrs Bryant went under the hammer for 375p/kg (£2,014) and a 662kg South Devon heifer from Laity Farms of Gwinear, Hayle looked well sold at 369p/kg (£2,443).

Plenty more quality animals forward, which are too numerous to mention but a credit to their vendors. Of the total 24 bullocks forward, 19 sold for over £2,000, 9 of those over £2,400 and 10 over 360p/kg. Overall section average of 350.3p/kg! Cull Cows

The Cull trade is again following in the footsteps of the Prime, with record prices achieved again.

Joint top honours of 290p/kg were awarded to both a good Limousin cow from Messrs W T Bryant and Sons of St Martin, Helston (£2,062) and a good non-FABBL grazer from Mr J L Sampson of St Buryan at the same money. Another similar non-FABBL Limousin from Mr Sampson was next at 284p/kg, followed by a pair of Simmental cows from Messrs D R & J C Vincent of Tregavethan, Truro at 275p/kg and 273p/kg.

An older Hereford cow from Messrs P & M R Biddick of St Columb sold thereafter for 263p/kg. Dairy types topped at 280p/kg for a Friesian heifer from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston which was followed by a Friesian heifer from Messrs K & M Ferris of Gunwalloe, Helston at 256p/kg and yet another Friesian heifer this time from Mr R G Rowe of London Apprentice, St Austell at 255p/kg.

Many more cows forward realised strong money and vendors are encouraged to market both FABBL and non-FABBL cows to capitalise on the strong trade.

Yet another tremendous trade with many top-class consignments passing through the ring.

Steers selling to £2170 for a fine pair of 26 month old Angus steers from Messrs W W James & Sons of Sancreed, Penzance who sold a further four to £2130 and four cracking 2 year old Limousins at £2110.

Mr R I P Andrew of Coverack, Helston sold a super pair of 20 month old Limousin steers to £2120, with a further trio at £1920 whilst Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro marketed a pair of 23 month old South Devons at £2100.

Mr A Blamey of Veryan, Truro marketed a pair of 20 month old Angus at £2090, which was followed by Simmentals from Messrs A D, D J & N C Freeman of Penhallow, Truro, and Mr F L Chapman of Silverwell, Truro selling to £2030 and £1970 respectively.

Younger steers selling to £1530 for a grand bunch of seven 1 year old Limousins from Messrs B K & E L Piper of Sithney, whilst a 9 month old Limousin from Messrs L J Richards & Son of United Downs, Redruth realised £1400. Further Limousins from Messrs Piper achieving £1375 for eight, followed by a trio of 1 year old South Devons from Messrs D R & J C Vincent & Son of Tregavethan, Truro at £1345.

Heifers then selling to £1780 for a 15 month old Limousin from Messrs T N & M Morrow of Ladock, Truro followed by a 19 month old Limousin from Mr R I P Andrew at £1690 and a 2 year old Limousin from Messrs W W James & Sons at £1670.

Choice heifers from Messrs A D, D J & N C Freeman selling to £1660 for 2 year old Simmentals, whilst younger heifers to £1540 for a 1 year old Angus on behalf of Messrs T N & M Morrow. A smart bunch of five British Blues, being 15 month old sold to £1130 on behalf of Messrs J R Semmens & Son of St Levan, Penzance.

A good quality consignment of in-calf heifers from Messrs P & M R Biddick of St Columb topped at £1710 for South Devons and £1705 for Limousins, whilst Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castlean-Dinas, St Columb sold a trio of 10-month-old Simmental rearing bulls to £1690. A roaring trade across the board.

Another short entry of calves selling on a wonderful trade from start to finish.

Best of the bull calves flew away to £510 for a Limousin x bull sold by Messrs S M & J Blee from St Martin, Helston who also sold their best British Blue x bull for £470, and further Limousin x bulls at £430, £380 & £330 and then going on to top the heifer section with their Limousin x heifer making £400.

Young Simmental x bulls to £460 for Messrs L W & S Hosken from Helston with their Simmental x heifer at £250. Further British Blue x bulls to £470 for Messrs K & M Ferris from Gunwalloe, Helston who also sold a Friesian bull for £250.

A consignment of young calves from Messrs C J & P H George from Tresillian, Truro sold a British Blue x bull for £395 and a Hereford x bull at £295. Mr S Parker from Callestick sold their young Limousin x heifer for £275.

Best of the stronger weaned calves all around four months old sold to £545 for a British Blue x steer from W P & J Jenkin Ltd from St Martin, Helston who went on to sell a further five British Blue x steers for £540 each, and their pair of Aberdeen Angus x steers making £525 each.

Messrs K & M Ferris sold their four month old British Blue x bull for £540 with further British Blue x bulls at £485 and £465 and a young Friesian steer for £370. Many more calves needed to meet this exceptional trade.

A stand on trade for cull ewes this week which remains very strong indeed.

Very few continentals forward and top honours went to a pen full of medium sized Suffolks from Messrs R E Gilbert & Son of Ruan Minor, Helston selling at £154.50. These were followed by the best of a run of Zwartbles ewes from Messrs C L Hichens & Sons of Penzance at £148.50.

Dorsets to £146.50 from Mr D J Lobb of St Austell. Rams to £143.00 for a Charollais from Mr R S Dawe of Grampound, Truro followed by a Zwartbles from Messrs Hichens at £131.50. A handful of 2T (sheep) forward topping at £114.00 for a pen of Charollais x from Messrs J Lutey & Sons of Grampound Road.

Many more could have been sold of the exceptional trade which averages £131.00 overall.

Store hoggs selling to £140.50 for a well fleshed single from Mr P C Tregunna of Veryan, Truro, followed by a single from Mr H A Ross of Portholland at £132.00.
