THE proposed strike action at Newquay’s biggest secondary school is to go ahead.

Scores of its teachers will go out on strike at Newquay Tretherras on Wednesday, February 26, and Thursday, February 27.

The Cornwall Education Learning Trust (CELT), which runs the school, has also been notified that there will be three days of strikes next week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The teachers have voted 92 per cent in favour of strike action, reflecting the “strength of feeling about the way they are treated by their employer”.

The National Education Union (NEU) says there has “unfortunately” been slow progress toward a resolution despite “initial positivity” around the appointment of the new CEO Dan Morrow.

Ian Williams, the NEU branch secretary said: “At a very late stage the Trust did offer a Teams meeting last Friday. Progress was made by an agreement to respect teachers’ contractual obligations.

“There are still however many issues to be resolved. Parents will rightly ask themselves how things have come to this.

“Teachers across the country are leaving in their droves. In the midst of a recruitment crisis, CELT MAT has still not resolved this dispute.”
