REMEMBRANCE ceremonies will be taking place in St Austell and the surrounding districts in honour of those who gave their lives serving their country in the world wars and other conflicts.

The main act of remembrance in St Austell will be staged on the afternoon of Remembrance Sunday, November 10, and will take the form of a parade and service.

The Annual Poppy Day Parade will begin from St John’s Methodist Church in Bodmin Road at 2.15pm and will pass through the town centre for the service of remembrance at Holy Trinity Parish Church at 3.15pm.

The town council has issued a formal invitation to dignitaries and organisations, including those for children and young people, to take part in the parade and service.

St Austell Town Band will play music for the parade along Fore Street, Church Street and Market Street, and members of the Royal British Legion will carry standards.

After the parade arrives at the war memorial outside the parish church, the Mayor of St Austell, Cllr Julian Young, will lay a wreath as will other dignitaries and representatives of organisations.

The Exhortation will be spoken and then a bugler will sound the Last Post before a two-minute silence is observed.

The Kohima Epitaph will be recited, then the bugler will sound the Reveille before those in the parade enter the church.

Following the service, there will be a march past with the parade moving through Market Street, Church Street and South Street. The mayor, the Royal British Legion president and other dignitaries will take the salute from the steps of the Masonic Hall. The parade will end in Old Vicarage Place.

The following day, Armistice Day, the mayor will attend a further act of remembrance at the war memorial at 11am. During the ceremony, Cllr Young, will lay a wreath.

The mayor will also have an early start on Monday, November 11, when he is due to greet the “poppy train” which will be at St Austell Station at around 5.50am.
