Truro Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society is inviting auditions to its next production: A Bunch of Amateurs by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman.

The show was launched at Redannick Theatre last night, with auditions at the venue tomorrow night from 7.30pm. The production will run from July 16 to 20.

Keen to boost his flagging career, Hollywood action hero Jefferson Steel comes to England to play King Lear at Stratford. He discovers too late that it is not Stratford-upon-Avon, but Stratford St James in Suffolk, and the company are not the RSC but a village drama group desperate to raise funds to save their theatre.

Jefferson's ego, vanity and insecurity are tested by this enthusiastic bunch of amateurs, and by the visit of his estranged daughter. Will King Lear ever reach the stage?

lan Hislop and Nick Newman were the leading scriptwriters for Spitting Image and have written several successful plays and television series. lan is also well known from the satirical programme Have I Got News For You?
