POOL Academy has announced the launch of its brand-new samba band, offering students a fun and engaging opportunity to explore the world of rhythm and percussion.

The Samba Band, led by Joey Holmes, a visiting music teacher with extensive experience in running Samba bands, will be holding weekly sessions every Wednesday to help students develop their musical skills and build confidence.

The group will focus on drumming and rhythm, allowing students to learn and perform samba music without the need for complex notation or prior musical training.

Participating students have the opportunity to be part of something exciting, where they can make music, collaborate with others, and experience the joy of performing in front of an audience.

Samba music is a lively and rhythmic genre of music that originated in Brazil, particularly in the Afro-Brazilian communities of Rio de Janeiro. It is most commonly associated with the vibrant and energetic Carnival celebrations in Brazil, but it also plays a central role in the country’s cultural identity.

The music department of Pool Academy delivers a wide range of opportunities both in and outside the classroom, including performances at events like ‘Songfest’ and ‘The Hall for Cornwall.’

Nick Ward, principal at Pool Academy, said: “One of our teachers stumbled upon a collection of samba drums in our store room, and it struck them that they could be a fantastic way to engage students in music.

“The beauty of samba is that it’s all about energy, and teamwork – perfect for getting students involved, regardless of their musical background. We hope to see the band perform at the Summer Festival, Christmas shows, and possibly even the Year 6 transition day.”
