PLANS to develop the site of former council offices in St Austell are moving forward.

The old Restormel Council buildings off Penwinnick Road, later used by Cornwall Council, were demolished last year and the site is being prepared for a mixed-use redevelopment.

Cornwall Council’s arms-length construction company, Treveth, is set to build new homes, prioritised for local people, and a small commercial centre.

As part of the scheme, the public are being invited to an informal drop-in consultation event on Tuesday, April 29.

The session will be run from 2pm to 7pm at the Pondhu Children’s Centre, off Dithmarschen Way, opposite the development site.

People will be able to find out more about the scheme and will have the opportunity to submit feedback at the event.

In addition, a consultation website and questionnaire will be live from April 29 to May 9.

Set within a 3.7-hectare tree-lined area, the development will include a mix of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom homes and apartments.

Designs for the scheme will be shaped by feedback from the community and stakeholders prior to the submission of a planning application in late-May.

Treveth head of land and planning Emma Rodgers said: “We’re pleased to announce our third and final public consultation event for the Penwinnick Road development will be held on Tuesday, April. 29.

“We received valuable feedback from members of the public who attended our previous drop-in sessions and we’re looking forward to communicating how this feedback has helped us shape the future of this key site.

“Our plans for this mixed-use development will improve community spaces and provide new, much-needed homes for local people, alongside incorporating commercial space which will boost the economy.

“We’re looking forward to meeting with local residents again and giving those who couldn’t attend the previous events one last chance to meet with the Treveth team and ask any questions they may have.

“Display boards will be available to view which give a sense of what the new neighbourhood could look like, and our team will be on hand with more information about the types of homes that will be coming.

“You can also find out more about Treveth’s approach to sustainability and its ethos for delivering homes for local people where they are much needed.”

The site at Penwinnick Road was acquired by Treveth from Cornwall Council in the autumn of 2023.

Founded by Cornwall Council in 2019, Treveth has more than 370 homes under construction, over 45 commercial units across 10 sites under management and 700 homes in planning or recently approved.

Treveth was established to improve the quality of rented accommodation in Cornwall and to increase the availability of homes across the open market rental and shared ownership sectors for those who live, work in or have family connections in the immediate vicinity of its sites. Current new home sites include Hedhas Dowr, Trevemper; Park Lanneves, Bodmin; and Gwel Basset, Redruth.

Treveth aims to build low carbon developments and strives to achieve carbon emissions targets set for 2030.
