PLANS have been put forward to turn a boutique hotel in a coastal village into a care home.

Llawnroc Care has applied to Cornwall Council for a change of use for the Llawnroc Hotel in Gorran Haven, near St Austell.

The hotel in Chute Lane already offers respite care alongside holiday accommodation.

The 18-bedroom hotel houses two eateries, the Terrace bistro and Coast restaurant, though the accommodation element has now closed for the season. A notice on its website says any requests to stay in 2025 will be responded to at the end of January.

A village resident has objected to the proposed change of use, saying: “Gorran Haven, alongside many coastal villages in the county, has witnessed a reduction in the availability of family housing due to the increased use of historically locally-occupied dwellings as short-term holiday lets.

“The demand for this type of holiday accommodation will only increase with the loss of the village’s only hotel to the detriment of the village community.

“The village needs its only hotel and associated social facilities, far more than it needs 18 high-priced, luxury care home beds.”

At present, the hotel is on the market with offers of more than £1.5-million being invited.
