THE achievements of people who have contributed significantly to the betterment of Newquay have been honoured.
Newquay Town Council has held its Community Awards ceremony to highlight the town’s unsung heroes for their tireless efforts, which was staged at St Michael’s Church on Tuesday, March 19.
England footballer Katie Robinson and British women’s surfing champion Lauren Sandland were honoured with Citizenship Awards for Outstanding Achievement.
The mayor’s award went to members of the town council’s facilities team, which included Rob Booth, Diane Conway and Graham Williams.
The mayor’s annually selected charities, Man Down Cornwall and The Mermaid Centre, also received cheques of £2,500 each to help with their services.
Mayor Cllr Margaret North expressed heartfelt gratitude to the award winners and charity representatives for their commitment to the community.
“Diane, Rob and Graham, who was unable to attend, not only keep our public conveniences really clean, but they also take pride in their work.
“True professionals and great ambassadors, not only for the town council, but for our great town. Thank you.
“Citizenship Award recipient Lauren Sandland attended with her parents and was truly humble in receiving her award. She is an outstanding athlete, and we wish her well competing in Puerto Rico and beyond.
“Katie Robinson, our local Lioness, was unable to attend due to her footballing commitments.
“We also extend our best wishes to her in her footballing career.
“Representative Matt Trebilcock from Man Down accepted a cheque for £2,500 as one of the mayor’s chosen charities. Nurses Sara Trotman and Anya Hart from The Mermaid Centre at Treliske accepted a cheque for £2,500 as the other Mayoral charity.
“I am so thankful for the incredible work both of their services provide locally.”
Newquay Town Council’s annual town meeting took place ahead of the Community Awards, which provided an opportunity for residents to gain insights into the council's endeavours over the past year, pose questions, and share perspectives on matters close to their hearts.
