A nine-year-old from Truro has recently been ranked number one in the Under 9s Girls sabre category at the prestigious Leon Paul Junior Series (LPJS) competition, held in London.

Beatrix Warner, a Year 4 student from Kea Community Primary School, secured the overall second place at LPJS but gained enough points to be ranked number one nationally.

Beatrix attends Truro Fencing Club, which meets at Cornwall Fencing Centre within Truro School. She has showcased remarkable talent and resilience, competing fiercely in local and national competitions, recently securing first place at Cornwall County Champions 2024 for under 10s.

Reflecting on her remarkable achievement, Beatrix expressed her dedication and admiration for the sport. “I love fencing because it’s challenging and exciting,” she said.

“I'm very grateful for the support of my coaches and my family, who always cheer me on and take me to different competitions.”

Parents Dax and Jade Warner described her ranking as a “profoundly proud moment”.

“It’s truly a joy to see Beatrix’s dedication and passion for fencing recognised on such a grand stage,” said Dax. “She’s shown incredible determination since she started fencing at such a young age. We couldn't be prouder of her achievements.”

“Between school, fencing, gymnastics and home-life, Beatrix is constantly on the move,” added Jade. “As parents, we love watching her compete and blossom. Beatrix has such a positive outlook on life and inspires us every day.”

Head coach Balázs Kurucz said: “Beatrix has shown persistent passion, hard work and to the sports, putting her skills and talents to the ultimate test at LPJS sabre competition.

“She fenced well, fighting through injury in the semis to reach the final and eventually take home the silver medal. Her determination and resilience are truly commendable.

“As a club, we are extremely proud of all our students for their dedication to fencing. Thanks to coach James Martin’s hard work, our fencers were very successful in the last few competitions.”

Beatrix was one of two talented learners came back from the LPJS with medals - Sarang Shankar took home the gold in boys under 13s and ranked number 1 in Leon Paul Junior Series 2023.
