NEWQUAY Women’s Surf Club CIC held it’s annual Halloween Surf event on Sunday, October 27.
This year, the club not only celebrated the spirit of Hallowe’en but also launched a crowdfunding campaign to support its community initiatives and promote women and girl's participation in surfing.
The club was founded by three local women surfers with a passion for bringing the community together, empowering women to get into the sea and sharing the stoke. This trio therefore set about creating a community focused, not for profit inclusive surf club in the heart of Newquay.
The Halloween Surf gave participants the opportunity to don their most creative Halloween costumes while catching waves and enjoying friendly competition. Prizes were awarded for the best costumes, and all surfers, regardless of skill level, joined the fun.
“We believe that surfing should be accessible to everyone, and our Halloween Surf event is a fantastic way to celebrate the community while raising funds for a cause we’re passionate about,” said Katie Sawday, one of the club directors.
In addition to the surf event, the club is seeking support through a crowdfunding campaign aimed at securing the future of the club. Funding will go towards purchasing equipment and increasing the amount of subsidised places for both the Women’s Surf Club and the Little Ladies Surf Club.
The club wants to provide affordable and accessible surf coaching for women and girls in Newquay and the surrounding area. It also offers subsidised and free surf lessons for low income families via the Community Little Ladies Sponsorship Program for girls age seven to 16 and community programme for women.
These programs provide surf lessons, access to a community of like-minded women and girls as well as support for those who would not usually be able to access the sea.
