SEVERAL events will take place in Truro to mark Remembrance, thanks to a collaboration between the local branch of the Royal British Legion, Truro City Council and Truro Cathedral.
The annual blessing of the ‘Garden of Remembrance’, on the lawn area at the east end of the cathedral, took place on Sunday morning.
The Act of Remembrance will take place at the War Memorial in Boscawen Street at 11am on Remembrance Sunday (November 10).
A wreath-laying ceremony will follow at the War Memorial at 2.30pm, followed by a military parade. This will pause on Boscawen Street for the salute with HM The King’s Lord-Lieutenant for Cornwall, Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho KCVO OBE, then make its way to High Cross for the formation of the Guard of Honour, before being joined by the civic procession.
A Service of Remembrance led by Rt Rev Hugh Nelson, Bishop of St Germans and Bishop to the Forces, will commence at 3.15pm at Truro Cathedral, to include a two minute silence, the playing of the Last Post and a poppy drop from the central tower.
This will be followed at 6.30pm by Requiem For The Fallen, in which the choir will sing Duruflé’s Requiem as part of a service of Holy Communion. Both services will be live-streamed and available in full on YouTube after the event.
On Armistice Day (Monday, November 11) the mayor will join military personnel and local dignitaries in Poppies to Paddington, dispatching a wreath on the first London-bound train to be placed at the GWR War Memorial at Paddington Station — a tradition that started in 2020 under pandemic restrictions.
Later that morning, the Truro Branch of the Royal British Legion will observe a two-minute silence at the War Memorial in Boscawen Street at 11am to mark the end of the First World War in 1918.
City mayor Cllr Carol Swain will take part in all events, including welcoming dignitaries and military personnel to Truro on Remembrance Sunday.
“These events are an opportunity for us all to remember those who gave their lives in the service of our country, and to honour their bravery and sacrifice,” she said.
