A man had a lucky escape after part of a restaurant roof in Newquay was blown off during Storm Darragh.

He was standing in a doorway opposite Señor Dicks in East Street when debris came hurtling at him from across the road.

Luckily the parts of the roof narrowly missed him as they came crashing to the ground. The restaurant has been closed for several months as is part of the businesses that are in the process of being sold along with the Hotel Victoria.

Police and the fire service were called out to several incidents in the Newquay area.

Slates from the Hotel Bristol reportedly blew off and hit vehicles parked nearby. The fire service attended the One Pentire development after a glass balustrade came away.

Fascia on the Portuguese restaurant in Cliff Road was blown off by the fierce winds. Gusts of more than 70mph were recorded in Porth.

A shed roof blew off and knocked over a street light into the road at St Johns Road. Police closed off the area before Cormac dismantled the street light using a grinder. Cormac also cut up a tree that blew over in Porth Bean Road.

A spokesperson for Cormac said: “The roof came off a shed in an adjacent garden and acted like a sale. It caught a lamp post which blew over into the road. We are cutting up the lamp post and making the pavement safe.

“We have not stopped attending incidents since 6amThe crew has been to Bodmin, Fowey, St Austell, Bugle and Par.”

Residents and businesses have suffered various storm damage to their properties. A wall next to the Feel Good Building in Pargolla Road came crashing down. People were warned to stay away from Island Crescent as roof slates were ripped off resident’s houses.

Several bins blew over in the town centre as well as temporary traffic lights at Tower Road.

A man was blown over and banged his head in Cliff Road and several people had to be helped after struggling to stay on their feet.

Storm Darragh whipped up huge waves along the Newquay coastline, which attracted storm watchers despite the dangers involved.

Several attractions were affected by Storm Darragh.

Newquay Zoo initially closed on Saturday as a precaution but will remain closed on Sunday after being damaged by the strong winds.

A zoo spokesperson said: “Due to Storm Darragh and the severe weather warning issued, we apologise that the zoo will not be open on Saturday.

“If you have pre-booked tickets to visit us, you will shortly receive an email from us with all of the details you need to know, including the option to switch to another date if you choose.

“We understand that this will be disappointing for those having to cancel their plans. However, our priority is to make sure everyone stays safe, including our animals.”

In an update the zoo stated: “Due to damage caused by Storm Darragh, we apologise that Newquay Zoo will not be open on Sunday, December 8. If you have made plans to visit us, please check your emails for updates.”

Newquay Trampoline Park shut on Saturday due to the high winds. A spokesperson said: “Due to Storm Darragh our trampoline and soft play park is temporarily closed.

“We are monitoring the situation and will keep you updated for when we can safely re-open. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”
