RESIDENTS at a care home in Cornwall have been taking part in their own sports day to celebrate the holding of the Olympic Games in France.
And among the competitors was a former athlete – who was delighted to win some new medals.
Eighty-year-old Keith Adams was an accomplished sportsman in his younger days. He was an endurance competitor for the British Horse Society, ran multiple marathons including the London Marathon and Paris Marathon, and in 1988 was an indoor rowing medallist.
Keith also holds lifeguard qualifications and spent a week crewing on the Malcom Miller tall ship.
To celebrate the Olympic Games, Keith competed in the Trevarna Residential and Nursing Home Sports Day in St Austell.
The event at the home in Carlyon Road saw residents participate in a range of fun sports, including table tennis and basketball.
Keith said: “I was delighted to take part in Trevarna Residential and Nursing Home’s sports day - it was great fun and I've won more medals!”
A spokesperson for the home said: “Not only was everyone buzzing from feelgood endorphins from getting active, but their sense of community hugely increased.
“The sports day was the latest in a series of events held by Sanctuary Care homes to provide residents with the opportunity to continue the hobbies they enjoyed before moving into care and for others to try something totally different.
Kerry-Ann Lake, Trevarna Residential and Nursing Home’s manager, said: “It was wonderful to see so many of our residents take part in this special sports day to mark the start of the 2024 summer games, especially Mr Adams!
“He has a lifelong passion for sports with a multitude of medals to prove it, so it was amazing for him to be competing again.
“One of our passions at Sanctuary Care is providing residents with a feeling of continuity, so they can carry on pursuing their interests when they join us. It’s so important to us that our residents continue to live the lives they have always had and this sports day was a great demonstration of how much fun these activities can be.”
