FIREFIGHTERS battled a second blaze at a derelict hotel in Newquay on Sunday (October 20).

Fire crews from Newquay, St Columb and St Dennis, alongside support vehicles from Launceston and St Austell, attended the incident at the Hotel California at 6.30pm.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus and hose reels to extinguish the fire shortly before 7pm.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: “A 999 call was received to a report of smoke coming from the rear of a derelict hotel beside the Gannel River.

“Two appliances from Newquay were mobilised and following their arrival, they confirmed there was a fire in the rear of the building "making pumps four.”

“Two additional fire appliances from St Columb and St Dennis were mobilised alongside support vehicles from Launceston and St Austell.

“The fire was declared as being extinguished at 6.52pm and all appliances returned to their home stations.”

Fire crews previously battled a major fire at the Hotel California on Sunday, June 29. The fire was fought from the exterior of the building following the roof collapsing and missing floorboards.

The hotel closed three years ago and is to be developed into 20 apartments and four houses.
