Prime Cattle
A short but sweet entry of Prime Cattle forward, with records set yet again.
A cracking pair of Parthenais x steers from Messrs W H & L M Williams & Son of Allet, Truro raced away to 404p/kg (£2,695) and 402p/kg (£2,561) at only 15 months old and 14 months old respectively.
A good 620kg non-FABBL Devon steer from Mr F Brent of Callington realised 379p/kg (£2,350) and the heifers topped thereafter by a 611kg OTM Limousin from Messrs E, M & S Beale of Porthtowan, Truro at 357p/kg (£2,181).
Cull Cows
The cull prices are continuing to forge on, with top going to a quality 609kg Limousin cow from Mr D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston at 351p/kg (£2,138).
A non-FABBL Limousin cow from Mr M D Wearne of Wendron, Helston sold for 288p/kg and a Limousin cow from Mr W Martin of Coombe, St Austell realised 266p/kg.
A 701kg Angus cow from Messrs R J Richards & Sons of Piece, Redruth at 254p/kg and a Stabiliser cow from the same vendor at 228p/kg.
Dairy types to a whopping 329p/kg for a Friesian heifer from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro with further heifers from the same Vendor at 322p/kg twice, 320p/kg and 300p/kg twice, and an older Friesian cow from Mr Heller at 229p/kg thereafter.
Store Cattle
Yet another large entry to report, selling to £2550 for a first class pair of 2-year-old Limousin steers from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro.
Mrs V Gay of St Austell sold her choice pair of 2-year-old Limousins at £2520, with a further single at £2440 and then a grand bunch of four at £2340.
Mr G T Stone of Carleen, Helston marketed a fine 2- year-old Limousin at £2080, followed by a Continental from Messrs P and P Tullett of Truro at £1960 and a trio of 2-year-old Angus at £1950 on behalf of Mr D Rounsevell of Veryan, Truro.
2-year-old steers selling to £1880 for Angus from Mr W H Pengelly of Praze, £1870 for Limousins from Mr M D Wearne of Wendron, Helston and £1790 for Friesians from Mr Pengelly again.
Younger steers to £1900 for a premium pair of 1-year-old Limousins from Messrs W S Gay & Son, followed by a single 1-year-old Angus from Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell at £1600 then 1- year-old Limousins from Mr J F Rowe, also of Par, St Austell at £1550.
Mr B R Wynter of St Buryan, Penzance sold a single 11-month-old Simmental at £1490, Messrs A R & T S Hooper of Shortlanesend, Truro sold a pair of young Limousins at £1470, and Mr E Tuckett of Par, St Austell, marketed five smart 15-month-old Herefords at £1460 apiece.
A good trade for heifers seeing top price of £1960 for six 18-month-old Herefords from Jelbert Brothers of Newbridge, Penzance followed closely by Mrs V Gay at £1950 for a single 2-year-old Limousin.
Blues from Jelbert Brothers then to £1950, followed by a flashy pair of 2-year-old Devons from Mr J McFadden of Penzance at £1840 with Devons also from Mr D Rounsevell at £1800.
Further 2-year-old heifers from Mr McFadden and Mr Rounsevell at £1700 and £1750 respectively, whilst Mr R T Dunn sold a 21-month-old Angus at £1770.
Younger heifers to £1520 on behalf of Maxco Farms of St Allen, Truro for their 11-month-old single Limousin, followed by a 15-month-old Blue from Mr A G Prowse of St Allen, Truro at £1390 and a 10-month-old Shorthorn from Mr A N Badcock of St Erth, Hayle at £1270.
Further 1-year-olds to £1170 and £1160 from Mr Badcock, whilst Messrs A R and T S Hooper saw their 10-month-old Limousin to £1210. A good quality entry all looking well sold on the prevailing trade.
Rearing Calves
A tremendous trade from start to finish, with a lack of first quality calves on offer, but all looking well sold.
A run of 4 month old weaned calves for Messrs Curtis Brothers from Penstruthal lit up the ring with their best British Blue x steer flying away to £720 and another British Blue x steer at £655 and going on to sell a pen of four British Blue x heifers for £655 each with another at £645.
Also, another run of young stirks from Mr T Hocking from Penzance selling their best two Aberdeen Angus x steers for £535 and a Hereford x steer for £505 and his Hereford x Heifer making £405, all being out of Jersey cows.
The young calves saw the best Aberdeen Angus x bull sell to £555 for Messrs J O Nightingale Ltd from Wadebridge who sold a further two Aberdeen Angus x bulls at £470 and £460, and further Aberdeen Angus x bulls to £525 for Messrs R J Richards & Sons from Redruth who also sold another at £445.
The best of the British Blue x bulls to £450 for Mr J Wilkinson from Constantine who sold another British Blue x bull for £395 and his Hereford x bull making £400.
Mr A G Cave from Rame sold an Aberdeen Angus x bull for £400 and his Aberdeen Angus x heifer making £370.
Topping the heifer section was a young Charolais x selling for £400 on behalf of Messrs B & J Bailey from Veryan who also sold an Aberdeen Angus x heifer for £310, and Messrs C J & J E Colwell from Creed sold a British Blue x heifer for £390.
Prime Hoggs
A flying trade, seeing an overall average price per head of £157.
Topping at £187 for a single heavy weight hogg from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn, Truro, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
The averages peaked at 336p/kg for a uniform pen of 50.6kg hoggs from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge, also to J V Richards Ltd.
Prime Lambs
New season lambs are in high demand, with trade up on the week seeing an SQQ over £4/kilo.
Setting the premium at 421p/kg for a smart trio of 39kg lambs from Mr T Ham of Baldhu, Truro, purchased by R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.
A top price of £174.50 for wellfinished 42kg Dorset lambs from Messrs M G & T A Tuckett of Par, also sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd.
Cull Ewes
The cull ewe trade has reached new heights yet again this week with another new record average of £154.50.
Top honours go to Mr T Bingham of Truro with a superb pen of Charollais ewes (pictured) sailing to £269.00 and £260.00 apiece for his first time selling at Truro.
These were followed by another quality Charollais from Miss Laura Monk of Chacewater, Truro at £259.00 and a trio from the same vendor at £248.00.
Texels to £210.00 for a pen from Messrs C D Greenaway & Sons of St Issey, Wadebridge with another at £197.00. Dutch Spotted to £199.00 again from Laura Monk.
A cracking run of Texel x ewes forward from Messrs K & D McFadden of St Just, Penzance with their best at £193.00.
Dorset ewes to a phenomenal top price for the breed of £173.00 from Messrs A J & A C Kingdon of Gummows Shop, Newquay and £171.00 for Messrs K S & L Dodd of Old Kea, Truro.
Suffolk x to £160.00 from Mrs M Thomas of St Ives.
Dalesbred/Swaledale types looking very well sold, to £99.50 and £88.50 again for Messrs Dodd. Rams to £148.00 for a Poll Dorset from Messrs A J Pellowe & Son of Redruth.
2T (sheep) to £121.50 for Messrs J Lutey & Sons of Grampound Road, Truro.
Store Sheep
A fairly light entry of store hoggs and couples although the forward stores remain in touching distance of the bottom end of the finished trade.
A well presented pen of close to finished hoggs from Mr R G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay topped the section at £146.50, followed by a trio from Messrs K S & L Dodd of Old Kea, Truro at £134.50.
A strong single from Miss R Bromage achieved £130.50, followed by a single from Mrs K Allen of Redruth at £124.
Single couples selling to £210 for a well presented Lleyn outfit, the ewe being a two tooth from Mr D Searle of Wendron, Helston followed by two pens of singles from Mr C Clarke of Looe at £191 and £180.
