Prime Cattle

A tidy entry of Prime Cattle, with yet more records smashed and Truro again setting the pace for the finished liveweight trade.

A real beauty of a home-bred 785kg Limousin steer from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge topped the section at 384p/kg and broke the pounds-per-head record at a showstopping £3,014.

A run of OTM Blue steers from Mr R I Nicholls of St Clement, Truro featured next at 370p/kg (£2,590), 368p/kg (£2,646) and 358p/kg.

A good 640kg Limousin steer from Messrs T A & A M Wills of St Erme, Truro realised 369p/kg (£2,362), a heavy 731kg Blue steer from Mr P Denton of Lostwithiel parted away at 366p/kg (£2,675) and another quality 628kg Limousin steer from Messrs Osborne at 364p/kg (£2,286).

Heifers saw a similarly topping trade with a trio from Laity Farms of Gwinear, Hayle at 360p/kg and 358p/kg (£2,366) for South Devons and 351p/kg (£2,011) for an Angus, with a Hereford heifer from Messrs E, M & S Beale of Porthtowan, Truro at 346p/kg (£2,266) thereafter.

Cull cows

Fewer numbers again this week and many more are required.

Top of the day was an Ayrshire cow from Mr D R Hair of London Apprentice which sold for 239p/kg, with a nonFABBL Limousin cow from Messrs R A F, R M & R A Roberts of Gweek, Helston topping the beef types at 226p/kg.

A pair of Friesian cows from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston realised 217p/kg and 210p/kg respectively and a Friesian cow from Mr D Pascoe of Sithney sold for 205p/kg thereafter.

The best Devon Cull Bull in from Mr R E Richards of St Keverne, Helston, weighing in at 944kg, parted away for 228p/kg and £2,152.

Store cattle

A big entry to report and trade as fast as ever, though fewer close to finish types forward.

Heifers led the way in the prices this week, topping at £2100 on behalf of Messrs C H Bird & Son of Hayle for their single 29 month old British Blue, who also went on to sell another Blue, this time 24 months old at £1780.

Mr R E Richards of St Keverne, Helston sold a fine 2 year old Limousin at £1925, whilst Mr N Withers of Kea, Truro marketed a 2 year old Blue at £1885.

1½ year old Angus to £1580 for Messrs R & D P Rule of Mawla, Truro, with Messrs L M & C G Vian of Wendron, Helston selling four Limousins of a similar age to £1545.

A further trio of Angus from Messrs R & D P Rule parted away at £1455, whilst a cracking single 19 month old Blue from Mr J F Rowe of Par, St Austell realised £1475.

Super 19 month old heifers from Messrs J D Bromley & Son of St Gluvias sold to £1440 for a trio of Blues and £1410 for five Herefords, whilst a pair of 2 year old Angus from Mr L Jose of Camborne sold at £1350.

Younger heifers selling to £1655 for an outstanding pair of 15 month old Blues from Messrs C J & K J Reynolds of Helston, followed by a single 15 month old Limousin from Messrs W H B Stephens and Daughter of The Lizard, Helston at £1310.

Thereafter, 1 year old heifers to £1255 for Messrs J R Semmens & Son of St Levan, Penzance, £1245 for Devichoys Farm Ltd of Perranarworthal, Truro, £1200 for Messrs B K & E L Piper of Sithney, Helston and £1185 on behalf of Messrs G S & K M Trevail of Bugle, St Austell.

A younger entry of steers in general but certainly not lacking in quality, and selling to £1900 for a trio of 16 month old British Blues from Messrs V J & K J Reynolds, followed by 2 year old Blues from Mr N Withers at £1885.

A framey 2 year old Friesian from Messrs P & S Harris of Bodmin parted away at £1845, followed by 2 year old Blues from Messrs L M & C G Vian at £1710.

Messrs W H B Stephens & Daughter sold a pair of 21 month old Limousins at £1665, whilst Messrs G S & K M Trevail sold a single 18 month old Angus at £1645 and closely followed by Messrs J D Bromley & Son at £1620 for their pair of 19 month old Blues.

1 year old steers selling to a tremendous £1790 for five quality Limousins on behalf of Mr R E Richards, who also sold Blues of the same age to £1710 and a further pair of Limousins at £1600.

A handsome trio of 14 month old Simmentals from Messrs A M & V R Pascoe of Gweek, Helston looked well sold at £1595, followed by a pair of 1 year old Devons from Messrs J E Nicholls & Son of Ludgvan at £1570, with a further five thereafter achieving £1500, whilst a single 10 month old Limousin from Mr J F Rowe traded at £1510.

An in-calf Limousin cow from Tresco Estate, The Isles of Scilly parted away at £1530.

Rearing calves

Another good entry of calves and young stirks selling on a continuing strong trade to a ring full of buyers.

Best of the young stirks sold to £855 for a British Blue x steer from Messrs W P & J Jenkin Ltd from St Martin, Helston who went on to sell further British Blue x steers for £850 and £825, and their pen of five British Blue x heifers selling for £775 each and another British Blue x heifer at £740.

A four month old Hereford x steer sold for £655 for Messrs R M & C D Rundle from Mevagissey and also four month old British Blue x steers to £645 for Messrs N J Cox & H Floyd from Tregony, Truro who also sold three British Blue x heifers at £395 each.

Messrs E B, M E & W R Symons from Ruan High Lanes had a nice consignment of Aberdeen Angus x stirks with the best three steers selling for £625 each and their bunch of four heifers at £525 each.

The young calves also saw a brisk trade with the best of the Aberdeen Angus x bulls making £435 for Messrs Searle & Son from Penzance, closely by another Aberdeen Angus x bull at £425 for Mr W R Davey from Probus who also sold another Aberdeen Angus x bull for £390 and his Hereford x bull making £385, with Aberdeen Angus x heifers to £285.

The best Hereford x bull made £400 on behalf of Messrs R G Olver & Son from St Stephen who also sold a Hereford x heifer for £290.

British Blue x bulls to £335 for Mr J Wilkinson from Constantine and Friesian bulls to £245 for Messrs K & M Ferris from Gunwalloe, Helston who went on to sell a further three Friesian bulls at £230 each and a consignment of Devon x calves from Mr D R Hair from London Apprentice saw the best bull make £245.

Prime Hoggs

Strong money again on the finished hoggets, with the well-finished hoggs particularly sought after.

Topping the hoggs at £165.50 for a pen of heavies from Messrs J E Nicholls & Partners, purchased by J V Richards Ltd.

The averages peaked at 335p/kg for a meaty pen of 46.4kg hoggs from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay, also sold to J V Richards Ltd.

Prime lamb

A good entry of New Season lambs forward met with keen demand.

Five pens forward for Mr B Lugg of Cury Cross Lanes saw his 42.1kg Texel x Dorset sell to 375p/kg, to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow, then a pen of heavyweights (50.6kg) achieved a top price of £160.00 from the same vendor, purchased by J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Cull ewes

A lighter entry this week and many more could have been sold on the continuing strong trade.

Prices peaked at £207.00 for a trio of Texel ewes from Messrs W H Morgan & Sons of St Newlyn East, Newquay, and another from the same vendor at £180.00.

A pair of Texel x Charollais types from Roberts Enterprises of Helston at £171.00. Suffolks to £168.00 from Mr T D Retallick of St Columb. Dorsets to £143.00 for a very fleshy pen from Messrs A J & A C Kingdon of Newquay, then £139.00 for the best of a run from Messrs W & R Taffinder of Truro.

Swaledales to £89.00 for a pair from Messrs K S & L Dodd of Old Kea. Rams to £143.00 for a 6T Lleyn from Mr B Cowell of Helston.

2T (sheep) to £154.00 for a Texel x from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay followed by another Texel x from Messrs K S & L Dodd.

Store sheep

Strong levels of demand for all types, with the top price this week of £132 for a forward pair on behalf of Messrs A J & S T Richards of Helston, followed by a trio from Mr K P Vincent of Camborne at £130.

Further lots from Mr Vincent achieved £127 and £119, whilst a strong single from Messrs K S & L Dodd of Old Kea, Truro realised £122.

Miss S McMillan of Redruth sold good stores to £115.50 and £114.50, with many store hoggs exceeding £100 thereafter.
