Sellectronics was named SME of the Year at a prestigious national manufacturing awards ceremony held on the River Thames in London.

The awards, organised by Make UK, the organisation which represents over 20,000 manufacturing businesses, recognised the achievements of companies from across the UK, and took place aboard the Dixie Queen padel steamer.

It was the Falmouth-based advanced electronics manufacturer, which started life back in 2008 with just one employee, who received one of the top honours on the night.

Since its humble beginnings, the firm has blossomed into one of the most advanced and innovative small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) manufacturers in the South West, now counting the likes of Airbus as customers. The business manufactures products for a wide range of high-reliability sectors, including Aerospace, Space, Defence and medical.

It was the company’s impressive growth and commitment to the green agenda which most wowed judges, having seen turnover double twice since 2020, reaching seven figures each year since.

While they’ve also demonstrated their commitment to people and the environment following a recent restructuring, which has since seen the company voluntarily pay the ‘real’ Living Wage and hire several new staff members, taking on their first apprentices in the process.

The business also gives back to its local community, sponsoring local youth football teams and a rowing club, and recently committed to becoming a carbon-neutral business by 2035.

Kerri-Anne Mruk, region director for the South of England at Make UK, said: “These awards are a testament to the dynamic companies and individuals working within engineering and manufacturing. The sector remains at the heart of creating wealth in the South West and as we grow our economy, there will be a bright future for companies like Sellectronics that make the most of their talent and expertise.”

Jon Hurrell, managing director of Sellectronics, said: “We are extremely proud of this award, it is such a privilege to represent Cornwall and the South West of England at such a prestigious event. To come away with the win shows how manufacturing is developing outside of the natural stomping ground of the North and Midlands. The team at Sellectronics have all had a part to play in the success of the business and their ability to adapt to the changes in our industry has been outstanding.”
