COMMEMORATIVE events are underway in Newquay to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Town crier Simon Anderson Jones read a D-Day proclamation at the Huer’s Hut at 8am, which was followed by a flag raising ceremony at the town council offices in Marcus Hill at 9am.

Military personnel, members of the Newquay Royal British Legion Branch and dignitaries including the mayor Drew Creek were in attendance.

The commemoration D-Day events in Newquay are being organised by the Newquay Royal British Legion Branch in partnership with the Newquay Town Council to mark the largest seaborne invasion in history, and the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe.

St Mawgan Military Wives Choir will be performing at the Huer’s Hut at 8.30pm.

The Huer’s Hut will also host the international tribute at 9.10pm, a beacon lighting at 9.15pm and the national anthem and the last post at 9.20pm as the sun goes down.

Mayor Creek said: “It was great to see so many people turn out for the flag raising ceremony.

“We are now looking ahead to the events being held at the Huer’s Hut tonight and we hope to see many people there.”
