A LARGE crowd gathered at the harbour in Charlestown for a ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
St Austell Bay Parish Council organised the event which saw a beacon being lit at the same time as hundreds of others across the UK to commemorate those who took part in the historic Normandy landings in France in June 1944.
Council chairman Cllr Bill Leach and former parish councillor Malcolm Neill, who served in the Merchant Navy for many years, took part in the ceremony.
Anna Minear from St Austell Town Band played a fanfare, The Last Post and Reveille, and Cornwall Councillor James Mustoe read a proclamation.
Cllr Mustoe said: “It was an honour to join the event to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day at Charlestown and read the proclamation.
“Thank you to St Austell Bay Parish Council for arranging the moving ceremony which was witnessed by hundreds of local people on a bright and clear evening.
“It was a fitting way to remember those who fought and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice on D-Day all those years ago so that future generations could remain free.”
Charlestown Harbour Ltd helped with the staging of the event.
