THE Coastguard was called to Holywell Bay following reports pollution had washed up on the beach on Thursday.

Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team removed a “sizeable chunk” of palm oil at about 4.20pm.

They removed it to a safe place for collection by Cornwall Council.

Palm oil is a type of vegetable oil widely used in food, cosmetics, and biofuels. Although harmless when processed for human use, solidified palm oil that washes up on beaches can be highly toxic, particularly to dogs.

A Coastguard spokesperson said: “We were tasked to Holywell Beach to investigate reports of pollution washed up on the beach.

“Upon arrival they located a sizeable chunk of toxic Palm Oil. The team removed it to a safe place for collection by the council.

“Thank you to Holywell Bay Surf Life Saving Club and local residents for all their assistance.”
