A Newquay charity is to benefit from a grandson and grandmother leaping from the skies.

Benjamin and Diane Wheeler are taking part in a skydive in support of The Wave Project in Fore Street, which provides surf therapy programmes.

Benjamin, who recently completed a week-long placement with The Wave Project, was inspired by the organisation's skydiving challenge poster. While this will be Benjamin's first skydive, Diane brings some prior experience to the table, having completed a jump before.

Benjamin said: “I’m taking on the skydive because I’ve had the chance to volunteer for The Wave Project and have seen the amazing impacts it has on children and adults alike. I think it’s a great cause and is brilliant to get people involved in a sport I love.”

Diane added: “I was thinking of buying Ben a skydive for his 18th birthday, but when the opportunity came up for us to go together and raise money for a charity that Ben has loved volunteering for it was perfect. I can’t wait to do it with him!”

Benjamin and Diane’s skydive is scheduled to take place at Dunkeswell in Devon on September 29.

The event will be one of several jumps taking place across six locations in the UK, including Surrey, Devon, Cornwall, Scotland, North Yorkshire and Durham. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views of the British countryside and coastline while raising funds for The Wave Project's vital interventions.

By taking part in this challenge, Benjamin and Diane aim to make a significant impact on the lives of children as young as eight who are struggling with mental health issues.

There is still time for others to join the Wheelers and take the leap. Those interested in participating or supporting the fundraiser can find out more and sign up on The Wave Project’s website.

Founded in 2010, The Wave Project offers the world's first surf therapy course funded by a government health service.

The charity has expanded with more than 10,000 young people having accessed The Wave Project Surf Therapy programme to date.
