A charity that helps vulnerable people in Newquay has been nominated for a prestigious award.
DISC Newquay has been put forward for the King’s Award for Voluntary Service which is the highest accolade given to local voluntary groups in the UK.
The Lord-Lieutenant of Cornwall Colonel Edward Bolitho presented DISC volunteers with a certificate marking the nomination at County Hall in Truro.
DISC chairman Monique Collins said: “We are incredibly honoured to be nominated. We don’t do what we do for medals, certificates or awards, however, it’s very important to me that my volunteers receive the credit they so much deserve.
“We just care about our local community.
“The volunteers are a very diverse group of people all coming together to give back to our community.
“We really have such a happy team.
“I absolutely love it at the moment as we laugh so much, and I don’t even have to feel I am the manager.
“It just flows now as everyone knows what they are doing. It’s magical really. We complete each other and that’s why it works.”
The charity provides various services including hot meals and clothing.
Monique said: “I am certain I speak for all of us as a group when I say the most important thing is to know that families are fed a healthy diet and have plenty of food to go around for mum and dad as well as the children.
“To not to have to worry where does the next meal come from, how to stay warm and how to keep your beloved pet animal.
“Clothing, school uniform, nappies, wet wipes and baby milk. These are essential things in life.
“If homeless, we will make sure you have food and toiletries.
“If street homeless we will provide you with food, a tent, sleeping bag and a phone.”
