CAMBORNE’S Christmas celebrations commenced on Friday, November 29 when the Christmas lights switch-on took centre stage.

Delivered by Camborne Town Council and BID Camborne, the event saw the town’s light switch-on and Christmas tree festival take place which brought the whole town together to celebrate Christmas with light, music and lots of fun.

The day started with the Christmas Produce Market in the town square which ran until 2pm. There was plenty live music in the square and some street theatre before Camborne would come alive with a twinkling array of Christmas lights.

Entertainment during the day and into the evening was provided by the Jumping Out Musical Duo, Ukuhayles, TR14ers, Holmans Choir, Bryhers Boys and the Winter King and Queen stilt walkers.

Due to the winds that were expected to hit the town on Friday evening, the difficult decision was made the day before to cancel the Children’s Lantern Parade. However, this did not deter the Camborne community who were out in force having plenty of festive fun.

Four-year-old Louis Hood, who was born with only half a heart and has so far undergone three open heart surgeries, got the honour of switching on the Christmas lights.

Despite his life limiting condition, Louis is described as an extraordinary young boy who has a “zest for life and a smile that lights up every room”. As someone who, according to his grandmother, “loves to steal the show”, he made the most of his switch-on role.

The BID Camborne businesses organised and paid for the Christmas lights and switch-on festivities. Their contribution amounts to 75 per cent of the costs of operating Christmas in Camborne this year. Camborne Town Council’s grant funding scheme saw them support 25 per cent of the cost of the festivities.

The Christmas Light Switch-on marked the start of Camborne’s Christmas festivities, with plenty more events and fun to be had. Copies of the Christmas in Camborne festive guides are available from many businesses in town and can also be downloaded here.
