Students from Mineral Point, Wisconsin, USA visited Gwennap Pit on Friday, March 21. The pit is chiefly remembered for its association with John Wesley, who preached there 18 times between 1762 and 1789 and declared it his favourite outdoor preaching place. Many Cornish miners emigrated to Wisconsin during the 1800s, in search of work when Cornwall’s mining industry in was in decline. Redruth and Mineral Point were twinned in 1997, and regular school exchange visits have been made since to cement the relationship. Gwennap Pit became part of the Cornwall and West Devon World Heritage Site in 2006.
