The second phase of works on Truro’s Malpas Road swung into action on Tuesday, with the aim of improving safety and accessibility for pedestrians.

The interventions, which are due to be completed by October this year, include the provision of new dropped crossings and junction narrowing to support traffic calming, along with improvements to the existing footway along the narrow section between Pendeen Road and Boscawen Park.

There are also refinements planned on the Malpas Road junction off Trafalgar roundabout, including the rebuilding of the existing splitter island and narrowing the carriageway to facilitate pedestrian crossing.

The project is being delivered by Cornwall Council in partnership with the Truro Town Deal Board. Temporary two-way traffic lights will be in place throughout the construction period to to ensure the safety of the team, pedestrians and other road users.

The traffic lights will be manually operated at peak times to help keep the traffic flowing, with access for residents and businesses maintained at all times. However, drivers are advised to allow extra time for journeys as some delays are possible during this period.

Work on Trafalgar Roundabout will take place at night and will be completed under lane closures, allowing the roundabout to continue functioning.

The Malpas Road scheme is the first to be delivered as part of Truro Town Deal’s Green Transport project, which aims to improve pedestrian and cycling provision within the city and increase connectivity with assets including the riverside and Boscawen Park.

The first phase of the scheme involved the creation of a landscaped green space area in place of the Pendeen Road roundabout, ersulting in a ‘T’ junction with new planting, paving, seating and footpath connectivity.
