A Ponsanooth man who has helped improve the quality of life for people in the village has been awarded a British Empire Medal for his services to the community.
Christopher Trewern, aged 80, has been involved in various community activities for nearly 50 years including after school clubs, youth clubs, holiday clubs, street games, parish council as well as Stithians and Ponsnooth Methodist Church.
He helped rebuild the old Methodist Sunday School following a fire in 2008 to provide modern community facilities named Ponsanooth Hall, which opened in 2014. Christopher is currently involved in helping create Ponsanooth Parish Neighbourhood Plan.
Christopher said: “My first reaction on hearing that I’d been awarded a BEM was disbelief.
“I thought who are the practical jokers amongst my family and friends but then I had the gradual realisation, and I feel very humble as there are far more worthy people.
‘’I’m receiving this award on behalf of the whole community of Ponsanooth as it recognises the sacrifice and encouragement of my wife Estelle, my family and so many friends in our village. So many people have been part of these projects over the years.
“I would not have been able to achieve everything without people’s help.
“I have been motivated by my Christian faith and values and service to others. Caring for and serving one another is a vital part of community.
“None of these things do I look for recognition or reward and find it embarrassing to even mention them but am so glad to remember the friends and family with whom I've shared life's journey and what we've achieved together.
“I’m sorry I've reached the age when endless physical energy has departed.
“The greatest achievements are probably those that will never be known or recognised by more than individuals concerned.”
