EXCITING plans for new and improved sports and leisure facilities at Truro’s Boscawen Park have been given the go-ahead by Cornwall Council.
Led by Truro City Council and funded by Truro Town Deal, the Sports Hub project will see a multi-use building constructed in Boscawen Park, suitable for a wide variety of indoor sports such as badminton, table tennis and basketball and incorporating new changing facilities.
Outdoors, there will be an extended and improved pétanque pitch, and improvements to existing grass playing surfaces, enabling pitches to be used for longer periods of the year.
The indoor spaces will be flexible and available for use by community groups and for conferences, workshops and family events.
The application was submitted to planning authority Cornwall Council in November 2024 following public consultation.
City mayor Cllr Carol Swain said: “This fantastic project will provide new and improved facilities for residents and visitors alike. I’m looking forward to seeing the new Boscawen Park Sports Hub opening its doors to the community in 2026.”
Alan Stanhope, chair of Truro Town Deal Board, said: “Boscawen Park Sports Hub will leave a lasting legacy of the Town Deal funding in our city, and will be enjoyed people from all areas of our community for many years to come.”
Cllr Louis Gardner, Cornwall Council cabinet portfolio holder for economy, said: “This hub is a real step towards our goal of creating a Cornwall where people can start well, live well and age well.”
Final detailed designs will be produced and a contractor appointed, with construction expected to start by the middle of 2025.
Truro was awarded £23.6-million from the government’s £3.6-billion Towns Fund in June 2021. Cornwall is the only area invited to submit proposals for four of its towns: Camborne, Penzance, St Ives and Truro, receiving a combined total of up to £88.7-million.
