The streets of Penzance were once more filled with light and music as the Humphry Davy Lantern Parade returned to the town.

But plans had to be changed slightly after the death of one of the marshalls involved.

Held in remembrance of chemist and inventor Sir Humphry Davy, the lantern parade involved children from Humphry Davy School accompanied by the Mayor of Penzance and local band the Raffidy Dumitz.

They started from the top of Causeway Head and paraded through town with an array of illuminated lanterns, created by school children with the help of local artists at workshops arranged by Penzance BID.

The Big Dance Company also performed and afterwards everyone had a dance at the silent disco held at The Globe Inn.

Earlier on, the Festive Market took place but had to be moved the day before after the sad announcement of the death of steward Craig Bond. Penzance BID put out a statement on social media saying: “It is with deep sadness we have to inform you of the passing of Craig Bond.

“Craig has been our ‘go to’ guy for all road closures, town markets, town flags and banners and various maintenance work since Penzance BID’s conception.

“He has also been a huge part of events and local groups in the town, volunteering his services for Golowan and Montol and being of invaluable help to Penzance Community Flora Group.

“It was simply not possible to run the road closures we had planned without Craig because he held the necessary qualifications and within this notice period we could not legally put the closures in place.”

The Christmas Market and the bands planned for the town centre had to be relocated to St John’s Hall in order for the market to go-ahead and the town to be able to celebrate together and honour a pivotal character of Penzance.”
