A PRESTIGIOUS Newquay choir has given its first public performance of the year.
Newquay Male Voice Choir took to the stage at St Columb Minor Church on Saturday, March 29, which was also their first performance under the baton of new musical director Tony Harries.
The choir was joined by the Mabe Ladies Choir and together they entertained a large audience in a concert in aid of Cornwall Hospice Care.
The audience were treated to a wide range of music from grand opera to Cornish folk with all things in between.
Mr Harries gave a new interpretation to some familiar Newquay MVC pieces, such as Alexander’s Ragtime Band, and “dusted off” some pieces that have not been heard for a bit, such as What a Wonderful World, while introducing a new piece, Sailing, which topped the UK charts in 1975 when it was recorded by Rod Stewart.
The Mabe Ladies repertoire was embellished by a duet as Maggie and Sue performed Sisters, famously recorded by the Beverley Sisters while Rose brought the house down with a set of “very funny” anecdotes.
Jim Christophers, the concert coordinator, said: “All in all everyone, audience and performers alike, had a very enjoyable evening, topped off by social singing as most of Newquay MVC adjourned to the St Columb Minor Institute.”
Newquay Male Voice Choir’s next performance is being held in St Michael’s Church on Wednesday, April 9 at 7pm.
The choir will be joined by the Aber Valley Male Choir from Caerphilly in South Wales.
Mr Christophers said: “Those who have attended concerts where we have joined with choirs from South Wales in the past will testify to the quality of the entertainment.
“Newquay Male Voice Choir would love to provide a large audience welcome to Aber Valley as they visit our town.”
The choir next performance after that will be a concert in St Michael’s Church on May 2 where they will be joined by the St Dennis Ukelele Club in aid of church funds.
