ECB CORNWALL PREMIER LEAGUE (SATURDAY)

St Just v Truro

Truro made it five wins on the spin as the city club eventually saw off a battling St Just side by eight runs at Cape Road.

The visitors batted first and amassed a competitive 227-8, 101 of which came from South African Jaco Van Greunen.

Useful contributions from the middle and lower order were vital as St Just’s spinners kept taking wickets throughout.

The second innings followed a similar pattern, but the lack of a big score proved the home side’s undoing as they remain bottom.

St Just chose to field and Ben Stevens dismissed Charlie Kent for a golden duck, and Harry Phillips was out to Ellis May for 11.

Van Greunen and Pakistani pro Amir Yamin added 37 before the latter went for 19 to Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Chamikara Edirisinghe (78-3).

Van Greunen was then joined by Murray Wyatt and latterly Adam Price in stands of 52 and 44 before he eventually departed at 205-7 having faced 146 balls and struck 13 fours.

Late cameos by Matt Thurlow (18) and Conway Gilbert (16no) proved key.

Yamin struck early to dismiss key man Neil Curnow, but from there on the contest swung back and forth, although Truro’s ability to keep the run-rate down ensured they were always ahead.

At 118-6 the game looked up before Edirisinghe and Mark Waters (18 off 37) added 44.

Gradually Edirisinghe and wicket-keeper Robert Jose whittled away at the target, but with 31 needed off the final two overs with two wickets left, it always going to be tough.

Eleven came off each of the final two, but Truro held on despite Edirisinghe’s 59 from just 43 balls, while Jose was 16 not out off 15.

Truro sit third while St Just sit seven points behind Camborne.
