Cornwall Cricket League County Division One latest round-up – Saturday, August 24
GRAMPOUND Road are 13 points clear of second-placed Beacon with two games remaining after both sides secured comfortable victories on Saturday.
Grampound Road visited all but relegated Camborne Seconds and piled on the runs as they amassed 233-4 in a match reduced to 45 overs.
Opener Alex Lean was the star as he struck 15 boundaries in his 118, while Chris Roberts (25) and skipper Tom Orpe (41) provided the support.
Camborne then mustered just 82 all out in reply with Ryan Pascoe’s 23 the best.
Spinners Ravi Karunarathna (3-15), David Neville (3-21) and Tom Fox-Dean (2-7) shared eight wickets.
Beacon continue to ensure there can be no slip-up after a workmanlike success over third-placed Hayle.
After openers Ben James (20) and Sam James (18) added 39, it needed 64 from Jordan Thomas to help the villagers reach 172 all out.
Tony Riggall took 3-39, while Matt Lello (2-18) and Matt Jacka (2-21) bowled miserly ten-over spells.
Hayle, who were missing skipper Tom Sharp, were then dismissed for just 93 in reply as Ben James and Gareth Mankee shared seven wickets.
Mankee’s swing took out the top order before James’ spin got in on the act.
A ninth wicket stand of 33 between George Badcock (26no) and Matt Jacka (9) made things slightly more respectable.
With four teams going down, it’s all to play for towards the bottom, and Roche gave themselves a big helping hand with an emphatic 64-run success at Paul.
All of the top five – Dan Robotham (26), Ryan Clark (26), Jack Williams (47), Shaun Trudgeon (29) and George Oakley (30) passed 20 as they made 218 all out at Hutchens Park.
Although Michael Fitchett (3-51) and Keiran Bowden (4-64) shared seven wickets it was Matthew Skewes’ 2-17 that was the best of the home attack.
What happened in the chase will go down in Roche folklore.
Paul were cruising at 96-0 with Ben Brooks and Ross Williams set, but once they were separated, all ten wickets fell for just 58.
Tyler Trudgeon was the hero with 5-39, while off-spinner Shaun Trudgeon (3-38) provided the perfect foil.
They are six points ahead of Mullion with a game in-hand after the Seagulls were beaten by Newquay.
The visitors were going well at 40-0 with Joe Crane and Tommy Rodda at the wicket, but they soon slipped to 85-6 with Mike Cockings (3-28) doing most of the damage.
But Mike Harding provided a perfect response as he batted with the tail to make 58 and help them reach 157 all out.
Mullion then slipped to 38-4 with Kiwi Michael Blanks out for 31, with the other batsmen out for ducks to Jack Howarth (3-10) and Rob Burton.
Harry Bray’s departure made it 48-5, but Mathew Davies (52) and Jonty Wheatley (22) then put on 55.
But once Wheatley went, they slipped to 116-9 with Nick Slack claiming 3-22. And although Davies (52) and last man Dylan Mitchell (5no) raised hopes, Burton returned to trap Davies lbw.
St Erme pushed Wadebridge closer to the drop with a 141-run victory at Castle Field.
It took Callum Edgcombe’s 77 to rescue the hosts from 167-8 to reach 230 all out as Wadebridge’s six-man attack took wickets, including 3-50 from Steve Gunner.
But the reply lasted just 29.2 overs as they were dismissed for 89.
Opening bowlers Kyle Van Rooyen (3-11) and Spencer Wilcock shared six wickets.
Antony Angove hit his highest score of the season – 160 – as Falmouth hammered relegated Penzance Seconds.
They amassed 297-6 before Penzance mustered just 110 all out in reply.
