The Cornwall Schools’ Athletics Championships were held at Par Track in good conditions, following which a team of 40 were selected to represent Cornwall at the South West Schools’ Championships last weekend at Exeter Arena, writes Dave Buzza.

It was good to see 21 different schools represented in Saturday’s team, including Five Islands School on St Mary’s in the Scillies.

With a breeze which favoured the short sprints, some impressive performances were recorded, with pride of place going to Wadebridge’s Nevie Tamblyn, who took the 100m and 200m junior girls’ titles, breaking the 43-year-old 200m record in the heat with 25.8s, and then going even faster in the final, clocking 25.6s.

Other double winners were Falmouth’s School’s Elodie Partington-Nash in the junior girls’ 100m and long jump, Falmouth’s Cara Ellis in the inter girls’ 200m and long jump, Helston’s James Phillips in the junior boys’ 200m and high jump, Truro & Penwith College’s Bo Reason in the senior girls’ 100m and pole vault, and Hannah Clemo in the senior girls’ hammer and discus.

Double medallists included Launceston College sisters, Isabelle and Charlotte Doney, Penryn College’s Isaac Brandwood and Theo Francois, Penair School’s Lara Harrold, Bodmin College’s Sawyer Wragg, Launceston College’s Alex Chamberlain and Budehaven’s Liam Higgins.

A welcome feature was three Sudanese refugee students represesenting Truro & Penwith College, with Roshdi Ali winning the senior boys’ long jump and Mohammed Mohammed placing second in the senior boys’ 400m.
