NATIONAL LEAGUE TWO WEST (SATURDAY)

Devonport Services 7 Camborne 70

CAMBORNE’S lead at the top of National Two West remains at four points following a comprehensive ten-try victory over a spirited Devonport Services at the Rectory Field.

The Cherry and Whites took the lead from their opening attack with a sixth minute catch and drive try from Ben Priddey, which was well-converted by Kyle Moyle and soon after the duo repeated the dose for a 14-0 lead.

The home side hit back with a converted score from former Launceston prop Rikki Bentham after a series of sustained attacks, but Camborne then withstood further pressure and two yellow cards to forwards Jordan Rose and Damien Cook before Alex Ducker intercepted to race 70 metres unopposed and dot down under the posts. Full-back Moyle’s regulation conversion took the score to 21-7.

On the half-hour hooker Priddey completed his hat-trick, this time going over in the left corner rounding off a flowing handling move with the try bonus point. Moyle added the extras with a majestic kick.

As the interval neared, Devonport crucially overthrew at a lineout on their own line and Priddey gathered the loose ball before showing determination and strength to barge over for his fourth try. Moyle again landed the conversion for 35-7 at the break.

Disciplined ‘Town’ defence prevented the home side getting back in the game in the third quarter before a length of the field move twice involving Moyle ended with right wing Harry Larkins crossing out wide on 58 minutes. Moyle’s superbly struck conversion took his team out of sight.

Soon after an excellent punt to touch by debutant Sam Walker created an attacking lineout from where the forwards drove repeatedly infield until Priddey inevitably went over for his fifth touchdown of the afternoon with Moyle again converting.

Camborne then brought up the half century with a wonderful long range try involving an exchange of passes between Josh Matavesi and the tireless Jordan Nicholls. The Fijian international duly delivered a delightful offload to flying left wing Ducker who danced around the final defender to score at the corner flag. Fittingly Moyle again landed the extras from the touchline.

Late on with the hosts tiring the Cherry and Whites added further gloss bagging another brace of tries courtesy of a CJ Boyce tap and go and fly-half Walker’s dive in with Moyle improving both to finish with all 10 conversions in a 20-point personal tally.

Camborne’s attention now turns to the huge home derby clash with local rivals Redruth at the Recreation Ground this weekend (2pm KO). Supporters are asked to arrive in good time with a large crowd expected.
