NATIONAL LEAGUE TWO (WEST)

Luctonians 25 Camborne 17

CAMBORNE’S lead at the top of National Two West is down to a single point following a third away defeat of the season at Luctonians.

‘Town’ began strongly with an early catch and drive halted with a home penalty award which set the scene for a frustrating afternoon for the visitors.

A last ditch tackle followed to deny the flying Alex Ducker before a Jordan Nicholls burst through midfield set up Ben Priddey for a run in near the posts. Sam Walker made it 7-0.

The hosts quickly hit back with a brace of penalties, but still inside the first quarter, hooker Priddey was driven over for his 37th try of the season. Walker’s well-judged conversion made it 14-6.

Crucially Luctonians scored from the restart after winning a line-out, and they went in front with an opportunistic try.

Camborne pushed again but a powerful lineout try gave the Herefordshire club a 25-14 lead at the break.

After a disjointed opening 20 minutes to the second half, a well-struck 40-metre penalty from Walker reduced the gap to eight (25-17).

Going into the closing stages a further Walker penalty shot from similar range went agonizingly wide.

The Cherry and Whites laid siege to the home try line and saw replacement prop Declan Prowse go desperately close.

However, it was not to be and Camborne will now reflect and look forward to another hugely important encounter this weekend with the visit of fourth-placed Cinderford to the Recreation Ground (2.30pm).
