NATIONAL LEAGUE TWO (WEST)
Clifton 41 Camborne 26
CAMBORNE’S long spell at the top of National Two West came to an end on Saturday as Clifton moved into pole position for promotion.
The Cherry and Whites fell behind early on but soon saw centre Josh Matavesi clean through, only for the pass to be adjudged forward.
Urged on by their large travelling support, ‘Town’ duly equalised with a catch-and-drive from Ben Priddey which full-back Kyle Moyle converted.
The home side then put on ten points in quick time to go 15-7 up and added a further try from a quickly-taken penalty.
Camborne hit back before the break as after fielding a clearance kick on halfway, Sam Walker fed Alex Ducker with the left winger setting off on a dazzling run ending with a touchdown behind the posts which Walker added to (22-14).
The teams traded tries at the start of the second half, which included a 39th of the campaign for Priddey, but a converted score for Clifton took the score to 34-19 whilst the visitors were making too many handling errors.
Going into the closing stages ‘Town’ got a lifeline as Ducker brilliantly intercepted inside his own half before racing clear to dot down his 29th try of the season. Walker’s conversion reduced the deficit to eight points.
Any hopes of a late comeback were extinguisher five minutes from the end as the Camborne cover, deceived by the bounce of the ball from a long kick ahead, allowed a delighted Clifton a sixth converted score to seal a deserved victory.
