MACCA Brown is facing the prospect of starting from scratch at Saltash United following the departure of all of last season’s first team squad.

But it’s a challenge he is relishing as he looks to build his own squad for the 2023-24 Western League premier division season.

Brown told the Voice: “There’s no getting away from the fact it is a rebuild, but I can’t complain one bit as to be fair I’ve left Millbrook in a similar position.

“It’s a new challenge, not just on the pitch but off it as well, but we are looking forward to it greatly.”

The club to benefit most from the Saltash exodus are Helston Athletic, where former Ashes manager Matt Cusack has signed right back Dave Barker, left back Callum Martindale and central defender Callum O’Brien.

Cusack has also sealed the signing of prolific striker Curtis Damerell from Torpoint Athletic.

Other Saltash players to have moved on include goalkeeper Jordan Duffey (Torpoint), Henry Wilson (Plymouth Parkway), Adam Carter (also Parkway) and Charlie Elkington (Tavistock), while Sam Farrant and Sam Hughes announced their retirements at the end of the season.

The club Brown left to join Saltash, Millbrook, are facing a similar major rebuild before next season.

From last season’s squad they have lost goalkeeper Chris Wearing, defenders Dave Youldon (Bude) and Jason Richards (Torpoint), midfield man Josh Toulson and skipper Jack Wood.
