WALTER C PARSON SWPL LEAGUE CUP SECOND ROUND (SATURDAY)
Axminster Town 1 Newquay 9
THE Peppermints made the 226-mile return journey to Axminster Town on Saturday and produced a superb performance which saw Louis Price score five times.
Despite having most of the possession, controlling the play with good interaction and rarely letting Axminster out of their own half it remained 0-0 for the first twenty minutes with Price being caught offside a number of times.
However the breakthrough came when Newquay worked the ball from defence to the midfield and then Callam Mconie put a great ball through to Jamie Edlin on the right wing who flew past the left-back and crossed the ball into the six-yard box for Louis Price to tap in his first.
Newquay’s second goal came within four minutes as Tom Shepherd’s corner from the left was missed by the keeper coming out, and ended up in the net.
The visitors continued to dominate possession and showed superb commitment.
They were rewarded with their third in the 31st minute when a stray pass across the 18-yard box found Price who controlled the ball, withstood the hard challenge from a second defender and then rifled the ball past the keeper with his left foot.
No sooner had Axminster kicked off again were they were picking the ball out of the net, as following a strong challenge from Cam Turner, the ball came to Price who flicked it to Lowry who controlled it and slipped it through for Price to run onto and slot the ball into the bottom corner for his hat-trick.
Again within seconds of the kick off , Axminster couldn’t deal with the relentless pressure that Newquay were putting on them, the ball went back to their keeper who’s kick out went straight to McOnie who from a good 30 yards hit the ball left-footed straight back into the Axminster net. (5-0).
The sixth and last goal of the half came shortly afterwards when Price took the ball down the left wing past the defender to the dead ball line and then squared it back across the outside of the box, a challenge by Phil Lowry on the defender saw the ball go loose to Mconie who’s sweet left-foot fired the ball into the top corner of the net.
The second half saw Newquay come out with the mindset and it wasn’t long before Ross Fallens picked up a loose ball from a defender and played Price in again on the left wing.
He came inside rounded the keeper and calmly placed the ball into the net.
It took fifty seven minutes for Shepherd to notch his second goal as a pinpoint pass from McOnie on the half way line put him in to collect the ball, round the keeper and put the ball into the net (0-8).
In the 71st minute Price got his fifth. After receiving the ball from Edlin outside the box and being forced out towards the corner flag, the former Mousehole frontman turned both the defenders, came back inside and hit the ball low into the left corner.
To give Axminster credit they never gave up and in the last ten minutes of the game pulled a goal back with a fine shot from outside the box to end the scoring.
