SWPL PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)
Newquay 3 Holsworthy 1
NEWQUAY scored three times after the break to see off a spirited Holsworthy and keep themselves top of the table.
The game was played in a very strong wind and it was Holsworthy that played into that wind for the first half.
A good crowd of 297 turned out for this fixture with a lot of youth players turning up with their parents to watch.
The first half was a struggle for both teams to control the ball, and although the hosts had the majority of possession, they were frustrated by poor passing and control.
The second half kicked off with Newquay facing the strong wind, but within ten minutes they were given a free-kick outside of the penalty box and despite Holsworthy’s wall, Cam Turner struck the ball into the back of the net.
Newquay’s second goal came after good inter-play down the left side of the pitch, the ball was then played across the outside of the penalty area where it was laid off to Lucas Potts who struck it into the top right-hand corner.
Newquay were now rampant and the third came from Louis Price on 63 minutes. Captain Harry Downing put a long ball forward which the Holsworthy defence missed and Price ran onto it before taking it around the two back-tracking defenders and fired it home with his left foot.
Newquay conceded late on when Jay Thomas’ shot into the box landed at the feet of centre-half Jedd Peschke who scuffed a shot into the far corner of Brodie Cole’s net from six yards, but it was the Peppermints who had secured an eighth league win from nine.
NEWQUAY: Cole, Grange, Evans, Downing, Turner, Potts, Dilley, Shepherd, Briggs, Mconie, Price. Subs: Fallens, Lowry, Butterworth, Blatchford.
Newquay man of the match: Josh Evans.
