Newquay Cricket Club round-up – Saturday, May 11
First team at home to Wadebridge Seconds – County Division One
Newquay stay top of top of County One after beating Wadebridge by 62 runs on Saturday.
The home side were in early trouble as they slipped to 0-2 and 57-5, but they recovered.
Australian overseas player Toby Chillingworth found some form with the bat, scoring a crucial 53 not out.
Mike Harding made 26 as Newquay were dismissed for 156 with three balls remaining.
Young spinner Tom Clarke bowled well, taking 3-28, while the experienced Charlie Ellis bowled his ten overs for just 19 as well as dismissing Adam Jenkin.
Despite some resistance from Charlie Ellis and Rob Centini, and a few lusty blows from Alex Forward who made 21, Wadebridge were dismissed for 94, Joe Crane taking a superb 4-16 and seeing the home side to a 62-run run win. Chillingworth (2-13 off 10) and Rahim Mangal (2-14 off 8.2) shared four wickets.
Newquay travel to Falmouth on Saturday.
Second team away at Tideford – Division Three East
THE visitors won the toss and opted to bat. With rain forecast later in the afternoon getting runs on the board early would have seemed a sensible approach.
However, this plan was thwarted by the Tideford opening attack of David Lockett and his fellow opener Nasrullah Mandozai who took full advantage of the overhead conditions and proceeded to hoop it round corners.
They made light work of the Newquay batters who suddenly found themselves 33-6 and the father/son Rhodes duo of dad Tom and son Alfie found themselves in a similar position to last week trying to stall the onslaught and build some sort of recovery.
The rain stopped proceedings twice and the match was reduced to 30 overs. However, Tom Rhodes (43 no) was left stranded with no more batting partners in the 24th over with Newquay ending on 91. Extras being the only other score making it to double figures.
It was still looking like rain would end play completely when Tideford’s innings began in the drizzle.
Remarkably the forecasted showers never came which allowed the match to reach a natural conclusion.
Newquay were well in the fight defending their small total picking up six wickets, Cadence Douglas with three (3-28), Ahsan Sabri and Alfie Rhodes with one each and a sharp run out from Nas Ismail. But Tideford’s number five Steve Olver (24 no) remained calm and saw them home in the 24th over.
Newquay Thirds away at Launceston Seconds – Division Four East
THE match was abandoned with the visitors struggling at 87-5.
They had crawled along to 80-3 after 30 overs, and despite coming back on after a rain break, another downpour ended play.
Tom Backway made a steady 32.
Newquay Fourths at home to Launceston Thirds – Division Six East
NEWQUAY Fourths, hampered by poor availability and late drop outs, hosted Launceston Thirds.
Sam Millatt top scored with 143* as Newquay piled on 284-4 before the visitors were bowled out for 58 in reply, Khyal Karim bowling superbly in taking 5-11.
