NEWQUAY Cormorants swimmers have had a busy and successful start to the new year in competitions.

Cormorants were at Penzance pool on January 14 and were the nominated host club for the County Junior Inter-club competition. This competition is open to all Cornish clubs and is for swimmers aged 12 years and under and comprises a mixture of individual and team races.

Cormorants, having won last year, were in a position to defend the trophy and the club juniors coach Sue Price was instrumental in selecting a team that was both strong but also inclusive in order to give as many swimmers as possible the chance to partake in a really enjoyable gala.

Cormorants won the meet by more than 20 points and the deafening noise in the pool as the children cheered each other on was incredible. Newquay Cormorants were champions again.

A week earlier, 26 of Newquay Cormorants’ younger swimmers competed in the Cornwall County Rising Stars meeting in Penzance.

The competition is primarily for swimmers to gain experience of racing and to record official times in order to meet entry qualification requirements for more prestigious competitions including the county championships.

Cormorants had a very successful day with swimmers returning a haul of 18 Gold, 9 Silver and 8 Bronze medals and plenty of swimmers recording county qualifying times in addition to their medals and everyone getting some worthwhile competition experience.

Newquay swimmers will continue to compete in the Cornwall County ASA Championships with races including the 800m and 1500m, as well as sprint distances in all styles.
