Newquay CC round-up – Saturday, June 1

ON A HOT and sunny day at the Sports Centre, Newquay took on Beacon in a Cornwall Cricket League County Division One fixture that held high importance to both skippers. Newqauy were looking to regain top spot whilst Beacon were hoping to break into the top four.

Beacon stand-in skipper Sam James drew first blood by electing to bat on a favourable wicket.

The home bowlers rose to the challenge with seamers Rob Burton and Jack Howarth bowling the first 10 overs for 17 runs and strike bowler Howarth removing Eathorne and the Beacon skipper with the score on 10.

Lampshire followed quickly off the bowling of Burton and Beacon found themselves well behind the run rate required to set Newquay a competitive score.

Star man Jordan Thomas joined Joe Tunnicliffe at the crease and the pair began to rebuild the Beacon innings despite tight bowling from spinners Toby Chillingworth and Rahim Mangal.

The Beacon pair took the score past 68 but with 34 overs gone it was clear that some intent was needed to get the visiting side to a par score.

Whilst Thomas bludgeoned his way past 60 and took the Beacon score beyond 100, a triple wicket maiden from Newquay skipper Joe Crane tipped the game firmly in Newqauy’s favour and despite a quickfire 27 from 24 balls from Emily Edgcombe, Beacon could only muster 151.

In reply, Newquay didn’t get off to the best of starts losing Matt Hartnett with the score on 15.

However skipper Crane and a patient innings from Tommy Rodda took Newqauy beyond 50 as they built a partnership of 65.

Despite Newquay losing Crane (53) and Rodda (8) in quick succession, a partnership of 61 between Chillingworth and Mangal took Newqauy within three runs of the Beacon total with seven overs to spare.

Chillingworth hitting the winning runs in the 45th over to end on 32 not out.

The seconds travelled to strugglers Liskeard in Division Three East, but it was the home side that ran out comfortable 41-run winners.

Newquay’s arrival was delayed due to traffic and the hosts chose to bat.

Openers Alfie Rhodes and Nick Slack bowled tight lines and each picked up a wicket tying the home side down, Slack finishing his spell with an exemplary 1-13 off his nine.

Liskeard then fought back with 130-run partnership between Danny Carroll (80) and Andrew Cobb (65) who played exceptionally well.

The partnership was broken by Ed Moseley and when young Alfie Rhodes 3-32 and Matt Millward (3-29) took over bowling at the death, they rattled through the lower order to bowl Liskeard for 235, including a fantastic direct hit run out from Alfie Bishop.

The chase got off to a steady start with Tom Rhodes and Slack combing well after the early dismissal of Tim Harrison, but the game swung in the home side’s favour with the introduction of JJ Webber who bowled a quality spell of 2-21 including the key wicket of skipper Rhodes for 35.

A collapse followed until Alfie Rhodes joined Slack to build a useful partnership and when dismissed, nico Christian came to the crease attacking from the off for a brisk 22.

Newquay finished on 194-8, Slack batting through for his 59.

Elsewhere around the club, the thirds were beaten by one wicket at Buckland Monachorum having been dismissed for 143, before following it up with a defeat at Menheniot-Looe Seconds on Sunday by 80 runs.

The fourths also lost on Saturday, by six wickets to leaders St Neot Seconds at the Sports Centre. Opener Sam Millatt made 43 for the hosts in their 142-8.
