FA CUP EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND (SATURDAY)

Willand Rovers 2 St Austell 0

ST AUSTELL are out of the FA Cup but there was plenty of evidence of good days ahead in their performance against Southern League opposition at Silver Street on Saturday.

The Lillywhites fell to 18th and 83rd minute strikes from Harvey Dorothy, but there was little to choose between the sides.

St Austell were especially impressive in defence with Tom Whipp and Olly Brokenshire outstanding as the central defensive partnership.

St Austell manager Chris Knight said: “It was a game of really fine margins again. I thought on the balance of play we were really in the game but two moments of quality from them, which you expect from a Southern League team, did for us.

“I can’t ask any more from the lads though and a little bit of luck or the bounce of a ball at 1-0 and we get a replay, but it wasn’t to be.

“I hate the term free hit, but it really was that for us and I was pleased with how we played in possession.

“We just need to be a bit more ruthless in the final third which I’m sure will come.

“My two full-backs were brilliant as usual and both centre halves dealt with everything; we just can’t switch off at this level and we know that.

“It was great to be involved in the FA Cup and we move forward now into a busy period.”

Town return to Western League action with a long trip to Brislington on Saturday before facing Torpoint at Poltair on Tuesday, August 13.
