SOUTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE SOUTH LATEST ROUND-UP
JACK Crago was the hero once more as Helston Athletic went top of the table in their first ever season at Step Four as they beat Bideford 2-1 at Kellaway Park.
With 11 minutes to go the Blues’ unbeaten record was in danger thanks to Cieran Bridger’s 37th minute goal.
But as has been the case so often already this season, on loan Plymouth Parkway forward Crago was the hero for Matt Cusack’s side.
Crago grabbed the equaliser on 79 minutes and then in the second minute of injury-time beat former Blues keeper Michael Searle to go top following Yate Town’s defeat at Exmouth.
Fellow Cornish side Falmouth Town edged past visiting Thatcham Town 1-0 thanks to Rubin Wilson’s 37th minute strike.
The Amber and Blacks were under the cosh for long spells at Bickland Park, but some fine defending, particularly from centre-halves Harrison Jewell and Tom Annear, kept Falmouth in it.
They got the all-important goal when Wilson took a pass, and fired a finish through a defender’s leg and past Callum Smart in the visiting goal.
Falmouth suffered several injuries, including seeing defender Tom Fisher suffer a broken ankle, but although Thatcham continued to dominate after the break, chances were at a premium.
The Cornishmen had a couple of late chances to extend their lead through subs Kane Thomas and Luke Brabyn, and despite nine minutes of injury-time where the 346 strong crowd had several nervous moments, Andy Westgarth’s side held on for a second win since promotion.
Mousehole had the afternoon off due to Westbury United’s involvement in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.
However they have been given a reprieve in the FA Trophy.
A clerical error means their tie at Bashley was due to be replayed last night (Tuesday), with the winners welcoming Falmouth on Saturday (3pm).
