Ladies’ Stableford – Tuesday, December 17

THE ladies signed up for an 18-hole Stableford, played in teams of three with two scores to count, but it was shortened to 11 holes because of the weather.

The winners with 47 points were Gillian Tregay, Sue Phillips and Abi Crosswood. Sue Sykes, Sue Semley and Pat Thom were second with 45 points, two clear of Annie Lobb, Lesley Pocklington and Fiona Pocklington in third.

The ladies enjoyed mince pies in the clubhouse afterwards.

The senior ladies' competition was cancelled but they gathered together in the clubhouse for mince pies and a quiz organised by Senior Lady Captain, Lorna Parfitt.

AFTER his triumph in the Turkey Trot the previous day, Tony Kellow kept up his recent good form by winning the Sunday Strokeplay competition on Sunday, December 15, with best nett and gross scores of 66 and 73 on countback from Darren Carhart in second place. Dave Parsall was third with a nett 69, three strokes clear of John Berryman and Stuart Watson in fourth and fifth on countback. Kellow and Berryman also recorded the only twos of the day.

It was Winter League for the seniors on Tuesday, December 17, with Peter Bradbury scoring 38 points for top spot from, a point behind, Peter Setchell in second.

A further point back, three players – Rob Maycock, Keith Boulton and John Berryman – were split on countback in third, fourth and fifth.

Derek Williams and Duncan Bruce were also split in sixth and seventh on 35, as were Dave Sweet and Dave Honey in eighth and ninth on 34. The last league point went to Vince Dymock who beat three others on 33. Six twos were recorded.

A "Baker's Dozen" Watson was on the menu for the men on Wednesday with Mike Partridge scoring 30 points from his 13 holes, a point clear of Jim Oliver and Steve Arthur in second and third on countback.

A further point back, Tony Kellow and Peter Bradbury were similarly tied in fourth and fifth. Three twos were recorded, all on the 11th hole.

To kick off the festive season on Sunday, December 22, golf club manager Mark Grieve laid on a Two-man Scramble which, because of very high winds, had to be played over the back nine.

The first three pairs were all tied on nett 32 with countback coming into play giving the victory to Paul Sviter and Rob Maycock from Steve Arthur and Michael Rooney in second and father and son duo Gary and Chris Sullivan in third. A special prize for the best Christmas jumper went to Steve Bennetto.

The seniors were limited to 14 holes for their Stableford on Christmas Eve where Jim Oliver scored 29 points to win by a point from three players on 28 in second, third and fourth. In order, they were Vince Dymock, Steve Arthur and Martin Drew.

For the second of his yuletide fun events, manager Mark Grieve laid on a pairs Stableford for the members on Boxing Day.

Michael Rooney and Simon Hartley scored 30 points over 14 holes to win by a point from Tony Kellow and Michael Meares in second place. A further point behind were Peter Talling and Gary Pitcher. A point back, Robert Morris and Gary Pitcher were fifth and sixth on countback.

THE weekend just gone saw nine Cornish bowlers make the long trip to York for the Short Mat Players Tour British Open Singles, a competition featuring 192 bowlers from nine countries.

Peter Hore (Holmans) had the best opening day of the Duchy bowlers, topping Group Five with a maximum 12 points after a clean sweep of wins against Mike Jones (ENG) 16-6, Pam Neilly (SCO) 15-7, John Pye (ENG) 11-8 and Ken Taylor (ENG) 15-6.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) won three out of four games to finish the opening day second in Group 28 with nine points after wins against Tommy Mikkelsen (NOR) 13-12, Luc Shorphion (BEL) 18-8 and Millie Froud (ENG) 20-6) and a narrow last end defeat to Pieterjan Stevens (BEL) 11-12.

David Studden (Holmans) was third in the overnight standings in Group 23 with six points after losses to Tony Stevens (ENG) 7-13 and world number one Alex Kley (ENG) 4-15 and wins against Grant Reid (SCO) 16-7 and Alastair Ritchie (SCO) 12-5.

Mark Slack (Duloe) was third with six points and Alan Trubshaw (Duloe) fifth with four points in Group 20 overnight. Mark started with a loss to Ferdinand Frantzen (NOR) 6-11 the claimed a couple of wins against James Ashcroft (WAL) 15-9 and Alan 10-9 before finishing the day with a 14-8 defeat to Jack Anderton (ENG). Alan started the day with an 11-11 draw against James Ashcroft (WAL) before following it up with a 15-12 win against Michael Murphy (ENG). After the defeat to Mark, Alan finished the day with a 11-9 loss to Ferdinand Frantzen (NOR).

Steve Smith (Holmans) was fourth in Group Two overnight with six points after losses to Trevor Tymon (ENG) 7-15 and Connie Coates (ENG) 5-15 and wins against Rob Wade (ENG) (13-5) and Carol Taylor (ENG) (21-3).

Caroline Trubshaw (Duloe) was fourth overnight in Group Twenty Nine after a mixed day starting with a 14-4 win against Davy Bitters (BEL) before losses to Natalie Evans (WAL) (5-14) and Lawrence Ireland (ENG) (6-11) and a win against Daniel Sands (ENG) 11-9.

Ian Crossett (Saltash Kernow) was fifth overnight in a tight Group Seven after a mixed day starting with losses to Roderick Dawson (ENG) (7-14) and John Lax (ENG) (8-14).

A 10-7 win against England’s Peter Thompson helped his case before he defeated fellow countryman Steve Whiting, 13-8.

Elise Daniell (Holmans) was at the bottom of Group 22 overnight after a run of defeats, a narrow loss to Gavin Matthews (WAL) 11-12 was followed with losses to Ed Kyle-Price (ENG) 8-14, Scott White (SCO) 7-15 and Roy Lewis (ENG) 7-20.

Heavy overnight snow across Northern England on Saturday night and early Sunday morning created hazardous driving conditions around York and with further severe weather forecast throughout Sunday, organisers were left with the difficult decision to cancel the event on Sunday morning.
